Robotics, Physics, Computer Science, and Virtual Reality Specialist Kit Project.

The Project

Opening September 2020, Doncaster UTC will specialise in Engineering and Creative & Digital Technologies for students aged 13-19. Students will receive an educational experience based on an innovative and engaging learning environment designed to equip young people with the education and qualifications required for a successful future in industry. The UTC will deliver a core curriculum based around STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, with an opportunity for learners to select units focused towards engineering or creative and digital technologies. In years 9-11 learners will access a range of employer projects and work experience across four pathways, rail, digital design, construction and infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. In years 12-13 students focus on either engineering or creative digital technologies.

In addition to the core curriculum, Doncaster UTC has identified a list of equipment focussed on robotics, physics, computing, and virtual reality which will provide an enhanced curriculum offering more pathways for young people.  The kit and equipment, resources, and software will deliver an enhanced curriculum with greater opportunities, higher standards, and an emphasis on digital technologies of the futures with a strong link to STEM learning and engineering disciplines.  Doncaster UTC is seeking investment to support the purchase of the enhanced kit. 

The Sheffield City Region (SCR)

The specialist kit project will support the Sheffield City Region’s (SCR) objectives to:

• Ensure SCR businesses have the support they need to realise their full growth potential
• Provide the conditions that businesses need to prosper and become more resilient

Doncaster UTC and its specialist kit project directly supports SCR’s fifth action to:

• Develop the City Region’s skills base, labour mobility and education performance

and its focus of:

• Skills Bank
• Progress to work
• Learn to work
• Invest in excellent facilities

Doncaster UTC will address SCR’s objectives through:

1. Ensure Doncaster UTC is equipped with additional kit and equipment to deliver the robotics, physics, computing, and virtual realityelements of the curriculum from opening (September 2020). 
2. Delivery of kit and equipment which is future-proofed and will allow the curriculum to flex and respond to the needs of industry.
3. Increase the number of young people taking a career or moving on to higher education in STEM and digital technologies in Doncaster and SCR.
4. Increase engagement between education and industry.

The project which is currently in development includes a contribution from the Government’s Local Growth Fund resources which is part of the Government’s continued investment in the Northern Powerhouse.
